EC approves diesel tax waiver

The Election Commission confirmed Tuesday that the interim government can extend the diesel excise tax waiver, without violating the election laws.

Election Commission (EC) secretary-general Puchong Nutrawong said that the EC has approved the Finance Ministry’s plan to extend the waiver to end-January.

The waiver has been in place since April 2011 by the Abhisit administration, he said. If this is ended this month, it would push up fuel expenses by nearly Bt10 billion a year.

Since April 2011, the excise tax of over Bt5 per litre has been waived.
