AFDD calls on public to support February election

The Assembly for the Defence of Democracy (AFDD) issued a statement Sunday urging all Thais to cast their ballots on February 2, warning that if they did not, Thailand would experience its "bloodiest" uprising.

It said the election was key to ensuring a peaceful transition to democracy. Without it, most Thais would support the People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) and return to the streets. Thai society would then fall again into a cycle of anti-government protests. If a peaceful solution was not found, the situation could lead to the bloodiest episode in Thai history, it said.

All parties - academics, private organisations and interest groups - should oppose the PDRC's movement, as well as other political intervention, and support the February 2 election, the group said.

Once an election had taken place, charter changes would be possible with a public referendum. Only the power of the people can preserve the democratic system and push for inclusive political reforms, the AFDD said. - The Nation
