Phnom Penh - Seven Cambodians asphyxiated in a well at the weekend when children trying to retrieve some dropped money got into difficulties and attempts to rescue them went wrong, a report said Monday.

Tuy Chin, 50, from a rural area of Siem Reap province, was collecting water when he accidentally dropped 3,000 riel (75 US cents) down it.
He used a ladder to climb inside, but could not to find the money and went home, where he told the story to his family, the Phnom Penh Post reported.
Three of his children, aged 11, 13, and 15, later returned to the 5-metre-deep well and climbed down to search for the cash.
All three died from lack of oxygen, the report said.
"My 11-year-old brother knew that my father had lost 3,000 riel in the well and he wanted to get it back, without thinking it would be dangerous. And now so many people have died like this," said Che Chhan, 30, a sister of the three.
Four concerned neighbours climbed down to help, but also died of lack of oxygen.
