Army deploys 16 companies of soldiers to keep order Saturday

Sixteen companies of soldiers from the First Army Area have been deployed to help police keep law and order during the red-shirt rally on Saturday, the Army spokesman said Friday.

Col Sansern Kaewkamnerd, the spokesman, said most of the soldiers have been deployed to guard key government offices and some will be deployed to keep order around Sanam Luang where the red-shirt people will demonstrate.

He said the soldiers are armed with only batons and shields.

Sansern denied allegation by red-shirt leader Jatuporn Promphan that up to 6,000 soldiers have been deployed to be stationed inside the Government House.

He said only three companies or 450 soldiers have been deployed to help police guard the Government House.
