Anupong confident no violence during red-shirt rally

Army Commander-in-Chief Gen Anupong Paochinda expressed confidence Friday that no violence would break out during the mass rally of the red-shirt supporters of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra on Saturday.

"I believe there will be no violence and everybody will observe the law," Anupong said.

He said soldiers are on standby to assist police when asked to.

He said the military intelligence agencies were still verifying reports that the red-shirt movement would create violence to topple the government in the so-called Taksin II plot.
