Chavalit says southern Muslims not want to be separated from Thailand

Majority of Malay-Muslim in the deep South has never wanted to separate from Thailand but merely wanted justice and fairness from Bangkok, Former Prime Minister Chavalit Yongchaiyud said Thursday.

In his speech to commemorate 60th anniversary of Siam Rath newspaper, Chavalit said only the separatist Patani United Liberation Organization (Pulo) is thinking about the separation but Muslims who live in the southernmost provinces for long time never want independence.

Even the Barisan Revolusi Nasional or the BRN also called for justice for the people in the deep south, he said.

Chavalit read out a letter from BRN asking the government under Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva to restore justice for the people in the predominantly Muslim region.
