Cambodian Martial Art, Khmer Bokator on Web TV
By Dante Scott
Before there was Muay Thai, there was Bokator. Now, you can see Bokator
On the web for free. http://youtube.com/watch?v=617qPJPBSPM
Bokator, the complete fighting art, developed by the Khmers during the Angkorian Empire. Bokator is the predecessor of modern Bradal Serey, Khmer kickboxing, also called Pradal Serey. Where kickboxing is limited to kicking, punching, elbows, knees, and head grapples, Bokator includes ground fighting, joint locks, manipulations, throws, weapons, and animal styles.
“Bokator, the Great Angkorian Martial Art” A new film, starring Grand Master San Kim Saen and Antonio Graceffo, will be debuting later this year, to show Bokator to the world. The film was directed by Tim Pek, an Australian Khmer film maker, most famous for his film of Khmer Rouge retribution and forgiveness, “The Red Sense.” Tim, a Khmer Rouge genocide survivor met Antonio while working on the film “Krabei Liak Goan,” (Buffalo Protecting Child). This Khmer Kung Fu movie pitted the hero, national Bradal Serey champion, Eh Phou thoung against Antonio Graceffo, who played the bodyguard of the villain.
“In addition to helping to make Bokator accessible to people all over the world, I enjoyed making this film because I didn’t have to die.” Said Graceffo, who originally came to Cambodia to find and write about Khmer martial arts.
A lifelong martial arts practitioner, Graceffo recently became the first foreigner to earn the Black Krama (black belt) in Khmer Bokator fighting. (Another American, Derek Morris, was the first foreigner to earn a Black Krama be certified as an instructor of Bokator.)
In addition to the independent film, San Kim Saen and his two American students have worked together on two shows for the History Channel, “Human Weapon,” and “Digging for the Truth.” Bokator will also be featured on the brand new web TV show, Martial Arts Odyssey, hosted by Antonio Graceffo. The show follows Graceffo around the world, as he explores new and often obscure martial arts. The pilot is currently running on yuotube.com

Bokator and Vovinam Southeast Asian Martial Arts contacts
I have been in South East Asia for six years, studying martial arts and writing for magazines, such as Black Belt and Kung Fu magazine, about Asian martial arts. I have also published four books. You can see a bunch of these stories and some photos on my ringo site. I also wrote four books, available on amazon.com. The most famous one is “The Monk from Brooklyn,” about my experiences studying at the Shaolin Temple in China.
I started working as a martial arts consultant for History Channel now and have done two shows, Digging for the Truth and Human Weapon. Especially, I concentrate on Khmer martial arts, Bokator and Bradal serey. I have a web TV show now, called Martial Arts Odyssey. The Pilot episode is running on youtube. It was shot in Philippines. The next episodes, coming soon, were shot in Cambodia.
Now, I am in Vietnam for the first time, exploring Vietnamese martial arts and culture. And planning our Vietnam filming. Vietnam is exciting but the martial arts are a little hard to find. Everyone is more concerned with learning English and making money. So, if you have any contacts for me in Vietnam, Cambodia, or Thailand, please let me know.
If you would like to watch my show on web TV? just click on the link.

All i know is that soon the truth will be revealed. No matter how hard Thais try to conceal and hide the truth, the truth will eventually leak out. And you know u i don't want to hate or anything but once you claim yourself as the creator, how can you expect the real inventor to feel. Of course the inventor (Khmer) is going to be mad. It's common sense, so the Thais shouldn't try to argue, theres plenty of evidence already (Bas Reliefs). And Khmers were even generous to try to call it Sovanna Phoum instead of just Kbach Kun Boran Khmer. But you know thai's. It's really sad too because i try to consider Thailand as Khmer's brother and sister, but they won't let it happen. For example when the Thai singer try to claim Angkor Wat as Thai, WTH! You already took enough land, money, gold, everything. It you had sum sympathy you would leave us a bed to sleep on. Enough is enough, i had enough. Imma represent Khmer in anyway i can possible. And to all the Khmer ppl out there just be yourself and don't let any other step on you! Khmer is a very powerful country with many powerful ppl lets bring that back together my brother and sisters, i will always luv my ppl and my country. Khmer Forever!

I belive that Karma will get you in what ever you do. I believe if you lie about the truth of where one true art is from it will back lash at you. Wherever the art derived from you will know not through textbooks or people but by a feeling the spirit. I recommend you visit the temples of Bayon and examine the culture and art around the temples and look carefully at the reliefs sculptures on the engraved walls and you will see warriors dressed in the customary ancient warefare costume. Look and you will see that the art is dervied from scriptures of Brali and Sangkrit that has been presented in Ancient Khmer Culture. Let truth be evident and may it touch your minds and heart for no matter if you may be Thai, Loas, Cambodian, Burmese, Cham, Vietnamese, or Malaysian everyone once had one ancestor. There is no point in presenting pride to your neighboring countries for we all the same family. If we were to fight and argue about what should be ours we only hurt ourselves and ashame our ancestors. |

Hey , hey , hey everyone. Since the Thai's brought out Muay Thai to the world and claimed the art was there's, we should atleast give credits to them. But truthly speaking, they stilled didnt invented it. From my knowledge: Muay Thai, Muay Lao, and Bradal Serey which all fell out of the same tree "and i quote". Just different branches and different ways of saying it. I've studied Boran, which was very rare art for Khmers nowadays since i was a child. I was told that , you have to trained passed muay thai(bradal serey) to be able to be train on Boran. Sadly to say that there's not that many Khmer masters that had survived the war 20-30 years ago. By the way if you guys know anything about Khmer Martial Arts, you should know that we do have a hero that used to represent Cambodia, goes by the named JEY YU TON. He's was the king of all kickboxer known all over Southeast Asia.
By the way you can contact me at my email addy about khmer martial arts if you have questions. boroshsonny@yahoo.com |

Listen up every one...I'm Cambodian full blooded & i learnt Muay Boran (Ancient Khmer Boxing) when i was in Cambodia for 3 years! & let me tell you this Thais did not invent Muay Thai they got it from Cambodians during the Angkor Wars, Cambodians were busy with the wars & did not have time making its history & culture known to the world, thais always got defeated by the khmer army when they used muay boran then thais copyied this and all of khmers culture. and every one knows its khmer just look on the Angkor Temples & Stuff. |

freestyle fighting is a khmer style. it originated in cambodia & da thai people picked it up when they came in contact wif the khmer people & was influence by khmer culture, & tradition. it jus dat the thai people had a chance to pass it to the rest of the world while cambodia was at war. so they told the world that it was thier style & formed organisations like w.m.c to back it up. the world should know the true origin of freestyle fighting. da fact is that it a khmer fighting style & should be recognised. |

There is no doubt about it, the Khmer invented the art of kickboxing to fend off enemies from taking over the land. It may well go bak to the age of Jayavarman the 7th who was the "God King". Soldiers were probably taught how to fight and overtime kickboxing was developed. And Yes, Khmer kickboxers were the best fighters, nothing else compared. this wasnt until the Khmer Rough period when Pol Pot n his followers killed many of the masters as well as destroying the Cambodian economy. |

yeah i guess you know im khmer by da name hehe well any way i have a few thai friends or so i thought but they always get on me cuz im khmer sayin that their country is more prosperous and popular then ours and im into kiccboxing as well and i asked why do they call it muay thai kiccboxing and how did it originate they couldnt really answer. But i know bacc in da old days they would have fights thai versus khmer and every time a khmer fighter would win they would shout muay thai that represented that they took down one thai fighter. i also think that it did originate in cambodia cuz when i watched the movie ong bak the thai warrior i realized the moves that tony jaa uses in there wuz the same ones my dad tried teaching me since i wuz a kid and he learned that from his father and my whole family is khmer. |

If thai is so good how come the won't allow Khmer fighters to fight in Thailand?
I heard that Khmer use to fight in Thailand but Thai's were so ashammed after the lost that they would hire someone to hurt the khmer fighters so they will not be able to fight any more or even worst. With no proof the khmers could not do anything about it. Since the Khmer were the best at kickboxing the Thai's decided to recruit fighters from Cambodia. They would teach how to speak Thai to pose them as Thai so they would be known as they best in kickboxing. Since the Thai's had better pay and khmer fighters wanted the best for their families they went along with it.
Have anyone else heard of this?
I am Thai
