PM thanks working class for big support
Published on February 9, 2005
Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra yesterday thanked low-income workers for returning to their provinces during the weekend to vote for Thai Rak Thai, and he promised that he would work hard to serve them in the next four years.
A source at yesterday’s Cabinet meeting said Thaksin expressed his appreciation that low-income voters went to so much trouble to cast their ballots.
Thaksin said the election results showed that the people were interested in politics and had faith in his government, the source said.
“Low-income people, who make up the biggest group in the country, made an effort to travel home to vote. They stopped
working to go to vote. This shows that they had every intention of voting,” Thaksin was quoted as saying.
“As a result, I will do what I can to serve these people in return.”
Thaksin told the Cabinet he would focus on ensuring a better quality of life for Thai citizens and a better environment in the next four years.
“Most of all, the government will try to increase the income of the people so that they will have better lives,” he said.
The prime minister also thanked his Cabinet members for helping in the election campaign, which led to a landslide victory for the Thai Rak Thai Party.
The Cabinet meeting was not attended by Chat Thai Party members Culture Minister Anurak Jureemas and Deputy Transport Minister Nikorn Jamnong.
