The German short film and animation showcase opens today at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre

German animation and short films are celebrated in a showcase that runs from today through January 27 on the fourth floor of the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre. There are six programmes in all, each with a different theme, and several workshops and discussions. The showcase is being organised by the Goethe Institute Bangkok and admission is free.

PROGRAMME 1:

Contemporaries - German Animated Film from 1989 until now

Combining short animated films in the last 20 and reflecting the diversity of German Animated films, the programme will open with the 1989 Oscar winner in Best Short Animated Film "Balance" by the twin filmmakers Christoph and Wolfgang Lauenstein.

It screens today at 6pm and again on January 27, when it will be followed by a Q&A session with Ulrich Wegenast, artistic managing director of Stuttgart Festival of Animated Film. The festival is the most important animated film event in Germany, attracting more than 50,000 visitors.

PROGRAMME 2:

Between State Art and Underground - Animated Film in the Germany Democratic Republic

The state-run DEFA studio for animated film in Germany produced more than 2,000 films each year, most of them for children. This programme has selected pieces that best reflect the artistic friction that prevailed at the time. Also included are works from the underground movement associated with AR Penck, painter, sculptor and printermaker who was at his most productive in the mid-70s.

The programme screens tomorrow at 6.30pm and again on January 26 at 6, when it is followed by a talk by Ulrich Wegenast.

PROGRAMME 3:

Best of Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film (ITFS) - International Selection

A collection of the best international animated short films from the Stuttgart Festival of Animated Film 2009 ranging from 3D to animated street art.

The highlight is "Muto", winner of the Grand Prize at the Festival of Animated Film 2009. The bold surreal animation depicts the stories on walls and buildings in Buenos Aires and is accompanied by equally ingenious electronic music.

Screens Sunday 24 at 11am and 5pm.

PROGRAMME 4 :

Best of Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film 2009

BW-Reel - Best of Animation Baden-Wurttemberg 

The BW-Reel programme comprises animated films from the Baden-Wuerttemberg state, which were produced last year and which show the diversity of the state's animation scene. Also showing are student productions from the Baden-Wuerttemberg Film Academy in Ludwigsburg and from the Media University in Stuttgart.

Screening today at 5pm and again on Sunday at 3pm.

PROGRAMME 5:

Kurz in Berlin / Short in Berlin 

A collection of shorts filmed in Berlin where artists explore the scenery their urban surroundings in the most diverse ways. Last year marked was the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall.

Showing tomorrow at 5pm and on Saturday at 1pm. Following Saturday's screening, there'll be a talk by Heinz Hermanns, the festival director and CEO of the Interfilm Berlin, organisers of the most successful short film festival in Germany, the Berlin International Short Film Festival.

PROGRAMME 6:

Best of Interfilm 25 - international shorts 

A selection of the 6,000 films submitted to the Interfilm Berlin in 2009.

Screening tomorrow at 6.30pm and on Saturday at 6pm.
