PM's south visit continues despite bomb explosion

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva continues his visit to deep south provinces on Thursday although a bomb exploded near a place where he would preside over an opening ceremony of a highway.

The explosion took place at around 8.10am, reportedly about 150 meters from the ceremony's tents. The blast injured a police sergeant working nearby.

Abhisit is scheduled to preside over the opening of the highway at 10.30am.

The premier was making a one-day trip to the province during which he would hand over government-funded houses to people affected by the daily violence in the deep south provinces.

He would also be briefed of the development projects in the region.

He will then go to nearby Pattani province to preside over an opening ceremony of a bridge and give moral support to volunteers and rangers.

Security has been beefed up in the region and the province ahead and during the premier's visit.
