VIENTIANE GAMES

Thailand reach magic 100

Muay Thai fighters and takraw players helped shrug off Thai fears that the target of 100 gold medals was out of reach yesterday as Thailand hit the home straight of the SEA Games in pole position.

It was Vietnam who dominated the day, though, with a haul of 13 gold medals from the 47 at stake, while Thailand collected only nine. Hosts Laos claimed seven golds, with the Philippines and Indonesia taking five and four respectively.

Vietnam ruled the shooting range yesterday with a clean sweep of all four golds up for grabs, but Thailand hit back after the men's and women's sepak takraw regu teams triumphed. The Thai smashers survived a sturdy challenge from Vietnam to snatch the women's regu, with the men's side stunning Laos and a packed home crowd.

The host nation made amends though by winning two of the three golds at stake in the shuttlecock, with Vietnam taking the other.

Vietnam also made a big splash in the fin swimming, surging to four of the five gold medals on offer, while their judo players swelled the national tally with two more nuggets. Chuthathip Bampenboon handed Thailand the gold in the women's Jyu No Kata class but the Philippines clinched the women's under-45 event.

The talent of Thailand's muay thai fighters shone bright in the ring, where they captured four golds to pip Laos' haul of three.

As expected, Singapore captured both golds in the men's and women's table tennis singles. Laos and Vietnam shared two golds each in the wrestling, which saw Sutep Oomchompoo win the men's 66kg (Greco-Roman) for Thailand.

Powerhouse Indonesia drew two golds from the archery competition, with I Gusti Nyoman landing the men's 70m compound title and Novia Nuraini the women's 70m recurve crown. The Philippines and Malaysia shared one gold apiece.

In track and field yesterday, Malaysia and the Philippines shared two gold apiece with Thailand and Burma each winning one.

Thailand's World Youth Athletics champion long jumper Supanara Sukhasvasti Na Ayudhaya, 17, stole the show yesterday. The Chiang Mai-born jumper leapt 7.83m to claim gold in his first SEA Games. Team-mate Sunisa Sailomyen, though, lost her crown in the women's marathon after leadiing the race until the last 50 metres. An exhausted Sunisa watched in despair as Filipina Banayag Jho-An kicked past her for the gold.

With only three days before the curtain comes down on the 25th Games, Thailand remain atop the medal standings with 51 golds in a total of 173 medals. Vietnam are just six behind, while Singapore are in third with 31 golds. Hosts Laos maintained their seventh place with 22 golds and 68 medals in total.
