Laotians were excited about what is one of the country's historic sporting moments and the signs were positive that the Games would be one of most memorable editions in its long history.
Every corner of Laos was buzzing with excitement and expectation after the hosts began their campaign in style, claiming their first gold medal through Soukthavy Panyasith in the men's Poomsae individual event of the taekwondo competition.
The host nation could not have been happier with the outstanding performance of its men's soccer team. The Lao side are currently on an unbeaten run and have a distinct chance of qualifying for the semi-finals. Some people, though, looked further ahead as they harboured hopes of seeing their team take on defending champions Thailand in the final.
The atmosphere before the opening ceremony was lively as thousands of people flocked to the new National Stadium, causing traffic congestion on nearby roads.
Officials implemented strict security measures and no person without a ticket was allowed to enter the stadium.
The hosts paid huge attention to the opening ceremony by hiring a production team from Belgium at a cost of US$4 million (Bt136 million) to ensure the show would leave a favourable impression on other participating countries.
The showcase, featuring seven performances, mainly reflected the hosts' culture.
The highlight of the night was the flame-lighting ceremony. A performer, dressed like an ancient king, fired a flaming arrow to ignite the Games flame. The show was rounded off with a series of dazzling fireworks.
Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, who attended the ceremony presided over by Lao president Choummaly Sayasone, greeted Thai athletes at the end of the show.
He wished them a successful campaign.
