In January 1961, after Their Majesties the King and Queen returned from a trip to Europe and the US, the administration of Field Marshal Sarit Thanarat organised a march of the Armed Forces in their honour.
On His Majesty's birthday on December 5 that year, a parade of the Royal Guards was held again after a hiatus of many years. From then on, the ceremony, which is accompanied by an oath-taking of the Royal Guards, takes place annually in early December. The march was later scheduled for every December 3 to provide His Majesty sufficient time for state functions during the royal birthday period. In 1996, the date was moved to December 2.
Initially, eight battalions of the Army took part in the march. Starting in 1982, four Royal Guard battalions from the Navy and Air Force, as well as those from the provinces, also participate in the showing of respect for the monarch every year.
