Can Anand guarantee his impartiality?

Former caretaker prime minister Anand Panyarachun, who chairs a committee looking into areas of concern regarding the development of the eastern seaboard, recently presided over PTT's 11th Green Globe Awards ceremony (Nation Nov 25).

The PTT is very much an interested party as regards the committee's findings. Will there not be any repercussions on Mr Anand's image as an honest broker?

No respect due for a billionaire tax dodger

You don't need the 2006 coup or any court verdicts, wrong or right, political or not, to judge Thaksin's destiny, as Hun Sen does. Before he was forced out of office, he put shame on Thailand because of all his wrongdoings. It's hard to believe how people can have respect for, admire and support a man (in possession of Bt76 billion) who does not contribute a single baht to hospitals and schools through the public tax system, and instead stores money in tax havens.

Thaksin has lost all kinds of respect and credibility forever, and should be politically dead. But money stolen from the public seems to keep him politically alive. For me it is impossible to understand how Westerners from decent democracies are able to support Thaksin. It is like saying Hitler was good because during the 30s there was no unemployment in Germany, Autobahn's were built and factories ran at high speed.

Focus on education for economic growth

In view of the ongoing global financial crisis, Thailand must focus on hi-tech training networks for enabling entrepreneurs to make a positive impact in wide-ranging realms such as basic education, public health, clean-fuel technologies and eco-tourism. The common goal is to build a vibrant and growing interactive communication network to create a more just, humane and moral world.

The powers that be should demonstrate a firm commitment by soliciting intellectual sponsors and support for a proactive learning exchange that combines doing good and doing well. Trusted advisers, successful business managers, knowledgeable NGO experts and volunteer mentors can help to build livelihoods for informal workers to incubate business acumen, strengthen their collective voice, make them viable economic competitors and ensure bottom-line profitability.

Activating new ideas, seizing every given chance and setting objective priorities can lead to altruistic career paths that are both satisfying and fulfilling.
