LPG compensation raised

The National Energy Policy Committee today decided to lift the import-compensation ceiling for liquefied petroleum gas.

Energy Minister Wannarat Charnnukul, who chaired the committee, said the extra compensation will come from the Oil Fund, which now sits on cash worth Bt20.5 billion. He noted that LPG imports have been on the rise, while the global price has escalated.

The move follows increased LPG imports that have boosted compensation above the Bt500-million monthly ceiling.

PTT president Prasert Bunsumpun said LPG consumption, particularly in the transport sector, was on the rise. Each month, some 100,000 tonnes are imported, and monthly compensation is now Bt1 billion.

Meanwhile, the committee also decided on the allocation of the Bt1.2 billion budget set to convert LPG-driven taxi to NGV. An amount of Bt1.05 billion will be used to buy 30,000 NGV tanks and equipment, through an e-auction, while the rest is for the retrofitting cost which should not exceed Bt5,000 per taxi.
