Auto production picks up on domestic demand

Thailand's automotive industry in October produced 53,271 units, up 8.8 per cent year on year and 9.5 per cent from September as a result of higher domestic demand, according to the Automotive Industry Club under Federation of Thai Industries.

The domestic orders started to pick up because of more spending thanks to the government's economic stimulus package and the recovery in tourism industry, said the club's spokesman Surapong Paisithpattanapong.

However, the sales of motorbike dropped 13.33 per cent from October last year and 7.12 per cent from September this year.

He said that in the first 10 months, 419,755 units of pick-up trucks and passenger cars have been sold, a 17.7 per cent decline from the same period last year.

However, the automobile export remained murky as the orders in some countries such as Australia has yet to recover. Thailand exported 423,298 units in the first 10 months, a decrease of 36.54 per cent from the same period last year.
