CAMBODIA'S SPYING CHARGE

Accused Thai engineer confessed - lawyer

A Thai engineer charged of spying in Cambodia had confessed in Cambodian court last week that he passed on fight plans of former Thai PM Thaksin Shinawatra to a Thai diplomat diplomat who was expelled.

Siwarak Chotiphon said that he sent the flight to Thai Embassy in Phnom Penh's First Secretary Kamrob Palawatwichai ten minutes after Thaksin's aircraft landed in Phnom Penh on November 10.

Kao Soupha, lawyer of Siwarak, quoted the defendant that he did not know at the beginning that Thaksin was on the plane.

"My client did not spy on Thaksin's flight plan since it is his responsibility as the official of the air traffic service company to know about the flight information," Kao Soupha said in a phone interview from Phnom Penh.
