PRO-THAKSIN MASS RALLY

Cabinet to consider ISA from Sat 28 to Dec 14

Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban will propose to the Cabinet that the Internal Security Act be imposed in some areas of Bangkok from Saturday to December 14.

However, the ISA will not be imposed in the Sanam Luang area, he said.

The deputy PM, who is in charge of national security, said agencies in charge of public safety agreed that the red shirts be asked to postpone their rally because apart from the Trooping of Colours on December 2, celebrations of His Majesty's 82nd birthday will run until December 13.

The antigovernment red shirts have scheduled a rally at Democracy Monument on Saturday and are planning to march to other areas nearby before dispersing on December 2.

Suthep said that if the red shirts cause any chaos during their marches, the government would consider extending the ISA to other areas.

He added that he would consider intelligence reports before he decides on whether to impose the ISA in Chiang Mai, where Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva is scheduled to visit on Sunday.

He said the government would not allow anybody to violate laws by threatening to harm the PM or anybody else, and that the police would be called in if the red shirts close the airport as threatened.
