Exgarment workers may be evicted

Exgarment workers may be evicted

Inconvenienced by the lengthy protest of a large group of former garment workers, the Labour Ministry is finally seeking to evict them from its premises.

Labour Minister Paithoon Kaewthong said yesterday that he had no choice but seek a court order to eject them.

The PM's Office has been bombarded with complaints accusing the ministry of negligence for letting the mob disrupt public services, he said.

The ministry has been assisting the 200 women, who have been laid off for more than six months by a foreign underwear maker, to negotiate for a better severance package, he said.

The latest ministrybrokered talks on November 16 broke down after the employer refused to give them an extra payment equal to threemonths' salary.

The ministry also needs the space to hold an exhibition honouring His Majesty's birthday on December 5.

To help the workers after they are ordered to leave, a career training course and rest area were being prepared at a ministryowned job placement facility in Samut Prakan to accommodate those who were willing to relocate there and undergo the free training, he added.
