'Ya ba' sting nabs 2

A Burmese woman and a Wa soldier with 199,800 ya ba tablets were caught in a sting operation in Chiang Mai's Chiang Dao district, police said yesterday.

Undercover agents had contacted Siewfeung Saeli, 48, to procure the illicit drugs from the Wa Army.

After the exchange of drugs and Bt10.6 million cash on Friday morning, police nabbed Siewfeung and a Wa solider identified as Lang Saemu, 25.

The suspects reportedly confessed that they were paid Bt15,000 each by a Jinhong investor who wanted to fund the minority groups' struggle against the Burmese government.

In another sting operation yesterday morning, Pol Sergeant Major Ratchai Chapuwong, 37, and his wife Sunantha, 25, were detained along with 40 ya ba tablets in Loei's Wang Saphung district.

Police also seized their Honda Civic, Bt120,000 in cash, gold jewellery, two pistols and 24 bullets.
