Mitr Phol receives carbon lable for new product

Mitr Phol Group has received the carbon label for Mitr Phol Gold natural mineral sugar products. Mitr Phol Gold is the first, and only, sugar brand that is registered and certified by the Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organisation and the Thailand Environment Institute.

This demonstrates the Group's production efficiency in the areas of reduced greenhouse gas emissions and global warming prevention, while raising the Thai sugar industry to international standards. Mitr Phol Group remains focused on production development and environmental protection and it plans to register the carbon label on other Mitr Phol sugar products in early 2010.

Kanong Sakpetch, Group Managing Director, said "As the producer of sugar, one of Thailand's major industries, Mitr Phol Group has run its business with a focus on the environment."

Carbon label is a signage that is placed on product packages to assure consumers of reduced emissions in the production process. Emission assessments are divided into two types including Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) ranging from raw materials, transportation, production, packaging, use to waste eradication and production stage assessment. The carbon label gives consumers a way to choose products that help stop global warming.

"For over 50 years Mitr Phol Group has operated under the theme of living together and prospering together. Production standard and responsibility to the environment and community are our focus. We are committed to making the best use of resources for the highest level of benefits. We use biomass power that helps protect the production environment. Mitr Phol Gold sugar production has led to a 10 per cent decline in our greenhouse gas emissions and this is in line with the carbon label criteria in the production stage. The Carbon label in the production stage requires emission assessment dating back to 2002 until today," added Mr. Kanong.

Moreover, Mitr Phol Group has prepared the production process development plan to ensure ongoing efficiency enhancement. As part of the plan, production apparatus and technologies are improved to ensure that they are environmentally friendly and meet the ISO 26000 standard that is expected to take effect next year. The Group will register for the carbon label for other sugar products of Mitr Phol at the beginning of 2010. The carbon label registration is the testament of our commitment to providing environmentally friendly quality products to the Thai market.

The receipt of the carbon label today reflects Mitr Phol Group's commitment to supporting the creation of a low carbon society. Mitr Phol Group is poised to develop its green sugar production processes and operating downstream businesses that are derivatives of sugarcane and sugar production. These downstream businesses include biomass power; ethanol and particle boards and they help reduce environmental problems caused by the release of waste while boosting the sustainable growth of communities.
