Tamarine in second round

Top seed Tamarine Tanasugarn led the Thai challenge into the second round of the US$50,000 NECCITF Women's Tennis Championships in Pune, India, yesterday.

Making a desperate attempt to get back into the top 100, the 112thranked Tamarine dropped just two games to rout out an errorprone Rushmi Chakravarthi 62 60. She is joined by rising stars Noppawan Lertcheewakarn, Nudnida Luangnam and Varatchaya Wongteanchai in round two.

Former world junior No 1 Noppawan, who endured a series of early round defeats, moved past Ganna Piven of Ukraine 75 63 while Varatchaya beat luckyloser Sweta Kumari Solanki of India 62 63. Nudnida beat fourth seed Ksenia Palkina 75 16 50 when the Kyrgyzstan player retired with an injury.

"It was a comfortable win because she made so many mistakes. I am under no pressure because I'm the top seed," said Tamarine who enjoyed the company of Thai players.

"It's good to have Thais here and we all won today. It would be nice to win here because I need as many points as possible to guarantee a place in the top 100 before the Australian Open cut off date," added Tamarine, who will play either Nirupama Sanjeev, former Indian top player, or Tamara Curovic of Serbia in the second round.
