The maximum number allowed for direct enrolment is likely to be 60 per cent - with the remaining 40 per cent through entrance examination, said Assoc Prof Uruya Weesakul, a member of the Council of Engineering Deans (OCED) of Thailand.
The proposed figures were proposed by a recent OCED meeting, and would be discussed and officially finalised in their meeting on Friday.
Uruya said the deans would also find out the criteria to be used for selection of students. They are debating whether a new examination based on the Professional Aptitude Test should be created for specially selected engineering faculty students.
Assoc Prof Kobchai Techaharn, dean of King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang's Faculty of Engineering, said a percentage increase in direct enrolment would encourage students to sit for individual exams opened to them by universities.
He called on the OCED to consider all options before making a final decision over the criteria and percentages for both selection channels.
