Anyone who witnesses domestic violence should call the Prachabodi Centre's 24-hour hotline at 1300, the Friends of Women Foundation urged yesterday.
Foundation manager Jadet Chaowilai revealed that 26,565 children and women were hospitalised this year due to domestic violence, or one case every 20 minutes - a dramatic rise on the 19,068 hospitalised last year. He added that 80 per cent of attacks were perpetrated by the husband or a family member. Citing a 2001 Thai NGO report, he noted that 51 per cent of victims said they had attempted suicide.
Presiding over the anti-domestic violence campaign ahead of November 25's International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, Social Development and Human Security Minister Issara Somchai said yesterday that related government and private agencies had ratified a 10-point declaration to end violence against children and women. The declaration highlighted laws such as 2003's Child Protection Act and 2007's Domestic Violence Act, the promotion of gender equity and a commitment not to ignore any form of domestic violence.
