Number of Thai gamblers in Cambodia drops
The number of Thai gamblers visiting Cambodian casinos has dropped by 40 per cent after Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has called on Thais to retaliate against Cambodia for its recent action related to ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra, Pol Col Anant Thongsuk, inspector at Chong Jom-O' smach in Surin's Kabchoeng District said.
“The atmosphere on the border has been lacklustre. There are only a few tourists coming to take pictures at the border,’’ he said.
Thai authorities have taken stricter control at check-points to step up security and prevent any violence in the country.
Cambodian traders continue to enter the border to conduct their business as usually saying they would continue their business as long as there is no order to close the border.
Dr Pinchai Pitsanuwong, honorary chairman of Surin Industrial Council said the government’s retaliation measure helped prevent money from flowing out of the country. These gambling dens, he said, have created social problems to Thais because once gamblers lose money in gambling they have to seek shark loans to pay off their debts.
