Landslide in Yala kills four in one familly

In the face of heavy downpours, landslides in the southern province of Yala have already claimed at least four lives.

In Bannang Sata district, a large mass of dirt collapsed on a house killing four family members inside. The victims were Assanai Akama, 28, Pafun Kraiwilat, 29, Korndanai Akama, 5, and Kathawit Akama, 3.

Deputy Narathiwat Governor Nipon Narapitakkul also revealed that up to eight people went missing during the landslides in Si Sakhon district.

"The victims might have been thrown into a nearby stream," he said.

According to him, the search for the victims faced much difficulty because heavy rain continued and the current of the stream was threateningly powerful.

"Rescue workers can't use inflatable boats in their mission to locate the victims right now," Nipon admitted.

It was believed that the landslides might have hurled the victims into the stream because their household items were found in the waterway.

Nipon said the flood situation in his province was critical because floodwater already swamped so many areas.

"All district chiefs are already instructed to survey damages in their respective areas and to hand out assistance to flood victims" he said.

In another southern province of Songkhla, floods also seriously hit locals. Following hours of downpours, many parts of Songkhla were under 60-centimetre-deep of floodwater yesterday.

Many schools in Tambon Pathong district in Songkhla suspended their classes yesterday
