The campaign awarded prizes to travellers who spent money during the low season.
One person - one of 100 who each won gold report¬edly valued at Bt100,000 - was informed by a gold shop that her prize was actually worth less than Bt50,000. The winner was offered Bt11,000 for the gold.
Orathai Phakeaw, another winner, told reporters her prize had also been appraised at less than Bt100,000.
"I thought the amount of gold looked small, so I went to a gold shop and enquired about the actual value. I was surprised it could be sold for only Bt20,000," she said.
