Saxena case leaves many people uncomfortable

The police have been rather agitated at the prospect of Rakesh Saxena returning to Thailand to stand trial on charges of bank fraud. They have leaked a story to the media that the Supreme Court of Canada will deliver a final verdict on October 29. And they are quite sure that the verdict will go against Saxena. So they have despatched a team of Thai officials to escort Saxena right back to Thailand on the following day, October 30.

Saxena has been fighting a marathon extradition battle, which has been going on for ten years. He left Thailand in 1996 at the height of the Bangkok Bank of Commerce crisis.

When the Thai police get excited about something like this, we have to be suspicious. For over the past decade, the Thai authorities -politicians, the police, public prosecutors and Foreign Ministry officials - have shown little interest in pursuing an extradition case against Saxena. Many observers have come to the conclusion that perhaps the Thai authorities would like Saxena to be left alone in Canada.

At this point, it remains unclear whether the Supreme Court of Canada will actually deliver the verdict in line with the Thai authorities' expectations. Don't forget that this extradition case has dragged on for so long over the legal technicalities, and has involved dozens of appeals and counter appeals. Some Thai politicians, who were involved in the Bangkok Bank of Commerce debacle, are also feeling uneasy about the prospect of Saxena's return. A lot of behind-the-scenes manoeuvring is going on. Besides all this, the Supreme Court of Canada must not be feeling comfortable with the rumours in Thailand about this high-profile case ahead of the verdict.

We can only wait and watch the latest developments in this case. Things could go either way.
