Sun Microsystems scores top spot in tape storage revenue, according to top analyst firm

Sun Microsystems announced it has secured the top spot for tape storage automation revenue for the first half of calendar year 2009, as reported by top analyst firm IDC.

Powered by Sun's tape storage innovation and the most comprehensive hardware portfolio in the world, Sun saw growth within its installed base as well as with new customers who benefit from these efficient, high-performance storage solutions.

"Tape storage is highly efficient, inexpensive and continues to play an important role in helping enterprise customers store and manage growing amounts of data," said Jason Schaffer, senior director, Storage Group, Sun Microsystems. "Sun has once again been recognized as the world leader in high-performance, reliable and affordable midrange and enterprise tape storage solutions. Going forward, we'll continue to deliver next-generation tape storage innovation to both our installed base and new customers."

In their report, IDC noted: "For the first half of calendar year 2009, Sun is number one in total worldwide factory-out automation revenue. Sun StorageTek does not make autoloaders or entry automation and has the number one market position on the basis of the strength of its SL500, SL3000, and SL8500 midrange and enterprise automation." - IDC Worldwide Tape QView Q2 CY09 September 9, 2009
