Joint panel formed to vet NACC report on Oct 7, 2008 crackdown

The National Anti Corruption Commission on Thursday agreed to form a joint panel with public prosecutors to gather additional evidence on the botched crackdown of the yellow shirts on October 7, 2008.

The NACC named its member Vichai Vivitasevi to lead the 10-member panel.

Following his appointment, Vichai said he would convene the panel's first meeting next week and that the job would be complete as soon as possible even though there was no deadline imposed.

The NACC report has targetted four suspects for prosecution, including former Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat, his deputy Chavalit Yongchaiyudh and former national police chief General Patcharawat Wongsuwan.

The prosecution review has recommended for the gathering of additional evidence and the interviewing of 100 witnesses.

Commenting on the review, Vichai said in his personal opinion, he deemed it unnessary to additional evidence gathering.

In regard to the witnesses, he said he would reason with the public prosecutors to cut down the numbers.

In case the joint panel fails to resolve outstanding differences, he said the NACC will likely try the case without the involvement of the public prosecutors.
