ROYAL PARDON FOR THAKSIN

Red shirts could not force petition's process : Suthep

Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban said Thursday that the red shirts have the rights to inquire about the progress of their petition which sought royal pardon for ousted ex-PM Thaksin Shinawatra but they could not force the process.

The red shirts had announced that they would gather on October 17 to mark the 60th day after they submitted the petition. The government said it needed 60 days to review the petition.

Suthep told reporters on Thursday that it was within the rights of the protesters to follow up the petition's process but they could not force the procedure.

The petition that carried millions of signatures was aimed at getting royal pardon for Thaksin who has been run away after being convicted of corruption and sentenced to two years in jail.
