Taiwanese qualifier Chang Kaichen yesterday halted Tamarine Tanasugarn's comeback attempt 7-5, 6-1 in the first round of the US$220,000 Japan Women's Open in Osaka yesterday.

Playing her first match since the US Open after being sidelined by an injury, Tamarine wasted several opportunities to break before handing the secondround berth to the Taiwanese rising star, who hit the headlines last week with a stunning win over Dinara Safina in Beijing.

Tamarine and Jill Craybas are still in the doubles mix after beating American Angela Haynes and Taiwanese Hsu Wenshin 6-4, 6-2 to reach the quarterfinals.
