A sample of low-income people found only 3 per cent had gained access to the governments' subsidy measures, a Chulalongkorn University (CU) lecturer said yesterday.
Sompong Jitradap carried out the study in collaboration with the Family Network Foundation and the Thai Health Promotion Foundation to urge the government to improve subsidy measures.
"The research found the poor who really need help could not access government information about subsidy projects - like a people's bank, sufficiency community and village fund projects.
The research studied 100 families in nine provinces with incomes averaging Bt10,825 per family per month. Their debts totalled Bt45,978 a family and 59 per cent were in debt.
"Despite the free schooling scheme, it seems to be a wrong solution The poor should get three or four times more than others living in urban areas."
