Thai-Lao agreement to boost agricultural trade & investment

Thailand and Laos will set up a joint committee to facilitate bilateral trade and investment in agricultural products, in line with the liberalisation under the Asean Free Trade Area (AFTA).

Agriculture Minister Theera Wongsamut said on Friday that the committee will work in tandem with the ministry's measures designed to facilitate the liberalisation which will take effect on Jan 1, 2010. Then, the quoto on 23 agricultural products would be lifted.

On the day, he had a discussion with Laos' Minister of Agriculture and Forestry.

Thira noted that Laos has warmly welcomed Thailand's agriculture investment projects, which would help boost bilateral trade value. In 2008, bilateral trade value totalled Bt78.96 billion, up 29 per cent from 2007. In the year, Thailand exported chiefly rice and corn worth Bt58.4 billion.
