The office runs the Sufficiency Community Project, which recently has been hit by a corruption scandal.
The embattled director did not say whether his resignation had anything to do with the scandal.
An informed source said Sumit had accepted an invitation to serve as secretarygeneral of the Sufficiency Economy Institute.
Meanwhile, a private company yesterday filed a defamation lawsuit against Pheu Thai MP Anudit Nakornthap and Matichon newspaper for implicating its name in the scandal.
Lawyer Somnuk Phumchaya represents the Energy ProTechnology company in the lawsuit.
The Criminal Court accepted the complaint. The first hearing into the case is now scheduled for December 14.
"We will file a compensation lawsuit too," Somnuk said.
Anudit said that watervending machines and solar cells provided by Energy ProTechnology to the government's Sufficiency Community Project were of low quality but sold at an inflated price.
"This is groundless," Somnuk said.
He believed Anudit spoke for political reasons. Pheu Thai is an archrival of the Democrat Party, which now leads the government.
Matichon published Anudit's interview implicating the plaintiff.
"The interview has caused damage to the plaintiff. The plaintiff's reputation is ruined and business has been lost," Somnuk said.
