National Museum Volunteer (NMV) will host a lecture in English titled the "Samurai of Siam" on October 1, when Asia history scholar John Toomey will revealing much of the untold story of Yamada Nagamasa and the "masterless samurai" in late 16th century. Back in Ayutthaya period, a small group of Japanese warriors fled their country and served the Siamese king. The warriors earned the trust of the monarch, and Nagamasa became an important ruler in the southern township in Nakhon Si Thammarat. Yamada died mysteriously leav¬ing many questions unanswered. Toomey's lecture starts at 10 in the museum's auditorium. No booking is required and the fee is Bt200 for nonmembers and Bt100 for member. Call (084) 942 1012 or email pollneranette@yahoo.co.uk.

Skimming the waves

Lanta Island is now only 20 minutes from Phuket, while Phi Phi is just 40minutes away thanks to the launch of a brandnew hydrofoil service that will see pas¬sengers being whisked over the ocean at 35 knots (65 kilometres per hour).
