Sugar farmers demand payment

Sugarcane farmers yesterday urged the chairman of the Chon Buri Agricultural Business Association to ask for payment of Bt13.8 million allegedly over-due from Chon Buri Sugar Industry Co Ltd, or they would rally soon outside Government House.

The group told chairman Jirawuth Singtothong the firm had not paid them within 15 days of July 30, as said by the Cane and Sugar Board. This affected many farmers, espe-cially 800 families of plantation workers.

Group leader Suwiwat Neungjamnong said the firm claimed it was waiting for the Cane and Sugar Fund to repay it debt of Bt16.9 million, from which it would pay the farmers. However, the two amounts were not related to each other and thus the farmers wanted jus-tice, or they would rally outside Government House.

Jirawuth said he would con-tact the firm and related agen-cies to help the farmers get paid.
