The Democrat Party yesterday concluded that four party members would be punished for their roles in a corruption allegation invovling the controversial sufficiency community project.
The four members identifed are councillor Phongsak Wutthichai, of a Bang Kapi district assembly, councillor Supphakitti Sukhanthapree, of the Bang Phlat district assembly, and party members Preechai Sriwilai and Jaded Phothimak. They face explusion from party membership pending a final decision of the party's board of executives.
Party spokesman Buranat Samuttharak said a party investigation panel found that the four had not directly benefitted finanically from their roles in the project, and "no other parties or MPs were found involved or implicated in the corruption allegation."
He denied that the measures taken against the four were meant as a way out to whitewash senior party figures involved in the corruption.
"Their acts were still in preparatory stages, which anyway breach a party standard of practices although not yet in full violation of the law," he added.
