
Wecker, who has 16 years of experie4nce in international schools in Thailand, said that the country's educational standards were accepted by international examining bodies. In addition, Thai universities are outstanding in many specialised fields.
Thai international schools have been accepted among parents and students both locally and aboard. Many choose to study in Thailand because the costs of travel and living expenses are substantially lower than elsewhere, as are educational fees, Wecker said.
"The country has high potential to be an international education hub as it is already known for good quality service," said Wecker. Moreover, the country's geographical location serves as the gateway to South East Asia.
There are 116 international schools in the Kingdom.
Bangkok Prep's income increased by 12 per cent in the first half of the year, despite the economic downturn.
Parents and students are paying more attention to the importance of education and choosing internationŽal schools in the country. Combination programmes promote the students' development and skills, including academics, language skills, sports, music and drama, he said.
Of the total of 490 students in Bangkok Prep, 48 per cent are Thais, and the remaining are nonThai stuŽdents. Wecker said the number of stuŽdents is expected to increase to 600 next year.
Normally, to focus on the quality of teaching, there are about 18 chilŽdren in a class.
To serve emerging demand for international schools in the Kingdom, Wecker said that he was considering setting up a new Bangkok Prep branch in Samui or Phuket in the next three to four years.
As Thailand is host to many forŽeign companies and embassies and consulates, as well as regional and international organisations, the international schools business should grow considerably.
In addition, in response to the government's policy to promote Thailand as an education centre in Asia, the Export Promotion Department will host the Thailand International Education Exhibition 2009 at the Queen Sirikit Convention Centre from October 9 to 11.
At least 12,000 local and foreign visitors are expected to attend.
