Zoo enjoys 150 per cent increase of income

Chiang Mai - Chiang Mai Zoo has gained a 150-per-cent increase in ticket income for the panda section thanks to the birth of panda cub Lin Ping, whilst the panda contest winner has complained of taxes that could amount to Bt300,000.

Jaruwan Chingchai, an assistant to the zoo director, said yesterday that the three months since Lin Ping's birth had seen ticket sales hike by 151.78 per cent and visitor numbers by 70.1 per cent compared to this year's first quarter. Overall ticket sales also increased by 39.75 per cent, she said.

In Sakhon Nakhon, Maliwan Pilasri, whose three-year-old grand-daughter Plaifa Srihakhom won the panda name contest's first prize of Bt1 million cash, said that the family paid Bt50,000 in withholding tax when receiving the Bt1-million cheque. And recently the Wanon Niwat district revenue office also asked her to pay additional income tax. The money prize plus a car and a package tour to China could result in about Bt200,000-Bt250,000 in additional income tax, Maliwan said.
