New national park

New national park

So Mong Reservoir in Prachin Buri

A new national park will be established soon - So Mong Reservoir in Prachin Buri - after a National Environment Board meeting gave initial approval to the plan yesterday.

The 2,728rai reservoir is part of the Thab Lan and Pang Seeda National Park, both of which cover a vast area in Prachin Buri and neighbouring provinces and have been registered as a World Heritage site.

An environmental impact assessment will be carried out before the reservoir earns status of a national park. A portion will be reserved for local irrigation and supervised jointly by the Royal Irrigation Department - a condition approved by a national World Heritage committee.

The meeting also extended a special regulation relating to environmental protection in Phuket, Chon Buri and Pattaya, due to expire at the end of next month, for another year.
