PM gaining support over police chief appointment

The fiasco over the appointment of the new National Police Chief seems to have been cleared up after those who opposed Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva's handpicked choice for the post have softened their stance.

Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban said he would be willing to ask Interior Minister Chaovarat Chanweerakul to vote for the person Abhisit handpicked.

He said as Abhisit's subordinate, he was willing to support the PM and would not criticise if he insisted to appoint Pol Gen Patheep Tanprasert as the new police chief.

“I am ready to be the go-between between the PM and the Interior Minister, but I have not yet been asked,’’ he said.

Pol Gen Suthep Thammarak, a member of Policy Police Commission, the powerful commission in charge of naming the new national police chief said the PM could propose Patheep for the commission approval again if he wanted but he should reach understanding with the commission members first.
