THAMMASAT ACADEMIC FAIR 2009

PM greeted by mixed welcome

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva was greeted yesterday by boos from a small group of redshirt protesters and loud cheers from youngsters at Thammasat University's Rangsit campus.

He presided over the opening of the Thammasat Academic Fair 2009 and gave a speech on "The Future of Thailand" at the university's gymnasium.

About 20 redclad protesters made noise with their clappers in the shapes of feet and hearts while the prime minister's motorcade was passing inside the varsity's compound. They were prevented by police from entering the building.

Inside the gymnasium, Abhisit was greeted by a large group of school and university students, as well as teachers and lecturers. Many members of the audience gave him loud cheers in addition to applause.

The premier said that the country was now beleaguered with many problems and that, without support from the public, the government would be unable to solve them successfully. He thanked Thammasat University for taking a supporting role for the country, adding that participation from academic institutions was vital in helping steer the country out of problems.
