ROYAL PARDON FOR THAKSIN

Govt to take more than 2 months to examine petition

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said Tuesday his government would take longer than 2 months to examine the petition submitted by supporters of ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra as it involved a massive number of petitioners.

"I have to say this to pre-empt any attempt to accuse the government of shelving the matter,'' the PM said.

He said he had inquired state agencies involved about approximate time needed to check the petition and he was informed that it would take at least 60 days for a simple Royal pardon petition.

He said the government could not block the petition but would have to forward its opinion on the matter to His Majesty's Principal Private Secretary.

The government would have to examine on the type of the petition and the qualification of petitioners, which is an important factor, he said.
