EC postpones decision on 44 MPs disqualification to August 25

The Election Commission postponed the decision whether to disqualify 44 MPs accused of holding shares in companies related to the media and state concessions to August 25, secretary-general Suthiphon Thaveechaiygarn said on Tuesday.

Suthiphon said the five members of the EC agreed to let investigation panel's secretary-general improve the panel's report. The investigators would have to study more on which companies whose shares would be illegal for MPs to hold and verify more information they were missing.

He said the EC did not buy the time. After the new report is finished, the commission members would take seven days to study the reports before making decision on the case.

Suthipol earlier said he believe the EC would be able to reach the decision today after taking quite a long time to work on the case because it involved a lot of people and companies.

Election Commission Sodsri Sattayatham said she believed the EC did not need to seek more time and should be able to make the decision today.

She said the EC would not resort to double standards but would stick to the same principle it had been using in making decision on previous cases.
