Justice Minister:Thaksin petition could be thrown out
The petition by the red shirts to seek Royal pardon for ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra would be rejected if it did not conform to legal criteria, Justice Minister Pirapan Salirathavibhaga said on Monday.
He said to seek Royal pardon, Thakin or his family must submit the petition. Besides,
Thaksin has not yet served terms in jail for his conviction on Ratchadapisek land deal case. “If it does not comply with the criteria, the matter is ended, we do not have to work on the case,’’ he said.
Justice Ministry spokesman Tharit Pengdit said the content of the petition was known to be seeking clemency for Thaksin. His Majesty’s Principal Private Secretary would send the petition to the Justice Ministry for consideration. The minister then will assign the Department of Corrections, which handles petitions for Royal Pardon, to give its opinion on convicts who request pardon. “There has never been any convict that seek Royal pardon by not having served terms in jail,’’ he said.
Corrections Department director-general Natee Jitsawang said his agency would look into the verdict on the case and the behaviour of the convict whether he had ever escaped and if he had repented.
Then the department will have to check the qualifications of petitioners. “Since
Thaksin has never had records of serving any terms, the department cannot provide any information. The decision will solely rest with the Justice Minster,’’ he said.
