Thai quartet hope to win

A quartet led by Thanyakorn Khrongpha is aiming to lead Thailand to success at the 49th Southeast Asia Amateur Golf Team Championship which tees off next week at Santiburi Country Club, Chiang Rai.

The tournament, better known as the Putra Cup and arguably the region's most prestigious amateur competition, will run simultaneously with two other events - the Lion City Cup and the Santi Cup - at the same venue between next Tuesday and Friday.

The Lion City Cup is an international event for male golfers aged under 18, and includes individual and team competitions. The Santi Cup, meanwhile, is for female golfers. The Cup was named after Santi Bhirom Bhakdi, former Thailand Golf Association (TGA) president, as a tribute to his contribution to Thai golf.

"It's a historic moment for golf in Southeast Asia, being the first time three big events at a regional level will be held at the same time. It will underline our readiness to host international golfing tournaments," said TGA president Rangsrid Luxsitanonda.

This is the sixth time Thailand are hosting the Putra Cup since its inception in 1961. Many of the country's household names in the sport have won the event, including two-time Asian Tour Order Of Merit winner Thongchai Jaidee who twice clinched the title.

Thanyakorn heads the hosts' impressive Putra Cup line-up, which is completed by Pawin Ingkhapradit, Apichat Papituk and Porameth Sonthirati.

Thais have an even more impressive record in the Lion City Cup, winning every edition of the tournament since its inauguration in 2004.

Golfers from 12 countries, including Hong Kong and Papua New Guinea, besides the Asean nations will take part in the event this time.

For the Santi Cup, the hosts will field prodigy Moriya Jutanugarn, who made history by becoming the first girl to win the Junior Open last year in Britain, along with Pinrath Loomboonruang Jaruporn Palakawong Na Ayutthaya and Thidapa Suwannapura.
