Promoting Khon

In response to HM the Queen's concern that the khon masked dance form is a dying art, the Fine Arts Department will take three measures that include establishing a training centre for traditional performances.

The National Theatre will reopen in December after restoration, in time to feature khon performances of the Ramayana to celebrate HM the King's birthday on December 5, said Department chief Kriengkrai Sampatchalit yesterday.

He also said Chulalongkorn University's Faculty of Engineering has completed a computer program to create khon costumes, while the Bunditpatanasilpa Institute plans to be a centre of khon knowledge in order to pass on the art to younger generations.
