Redemption song

Thai Rath's editorial leader yesterday referred to former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra's high profile birthday celebration on Sunday. The paper said that the party - a combination of entertainment and superstitious ritual - was considered a big occasion by many ordinary citizens; events were held concurrently in several provinces by Thaksin's supporters. One purpose of the ritual was to rid Thaksin of his bad luck.

Thai Rath said that the ritual was a follow-up to an earlier rite held by Thaksin's opponents, aiming to redeem the ousted former leader. Thaksin's supporters claimed he would be totally cleansed of sin on his birthday.

Thai Rath said that every Thai constitution has stipulated that everyone has the right to conduct any ritual ceremony. But such superstitious rituals are unlikely to get rid of anyone's sins. Thaksin should instead think about what he has done to bring him to this destiny.

Thai Rath summed up by saying that redemption can only be achieved by reviewing one's past deeds. One must then stop doing bad things, instead of blaming others for the consequences that one has to face.

Matichon, meanwhile, commented on the confusion surrounding the future of police chief Patcharawat Wongsuwan. His future is now hanging in the balance, due to speculation he had interfered with the investigation into the attempt to assassinate Sondhi Limthongkul, one of the senior leaders of the People's Alliance for Democracy.

Patcharawat is set to retire in two months. But the scandal surrounding the investigation into the assassination attempt has affected the credibility of the police.

Matichon said that the Democrat Party is the leader of the coalition government and therefore it cannot deny responsibility for whatever happens at the Police Department. The government should thus ensure that this agency has integrity and that officers perform their duty with integrity.

Matichon said the government has to exercise leadership by clearing up the confusion over the investigation caused by police officers. This is not only to eliminate confusion over Patcharawat's future but to ensure the police are serving the best interests of the people.
