Economic downturns spur more use of Bt10 coins

The Treasury Department has temporarily stopped the minting of new Bt10 coins as the number of such coin in circulation has risen sharply in the past 3-4 months, probably due to the economic crisis.

The department usually mints 10-12 million units of Bt10 coins per month. In the past months, about 7-8 million coins returned to the market per month. The department expected that the minting process could cease for two months.

Normally, coins are kept at home due to the lower convenience compared to bank notes.

The department however sees the normal circulation rates of other coins. While it produces 10 million units of 25-satang and 50-satang coins a month, only 1 million units circulate in the market.
